MY MOTIVATION

Changing Lives Through Reading

If you have found your way here, it’s because you understand the value of reading. Maybe you just need some tips and tools and can check out the resources I have shared. Maybe you need something more. If you or your child are struggling, I hope you will stay and learn more about the help I can offer.

I began this venture because I am passionate about the written – or printed – word. I believe it has the power to change lives.

That belief is what led me to earn my Master's in Literacy Education at Shenandoah University, where I received a firm foundation in the Science of Reading. One of the most important things I came away with is this: anyone can learn to read with the proper instruction. My goal is to help you or your child reach a level of proficiency that supports learning and makes day-to-day life more enjoyable.

I prefer working in small groups and one-on-one relationships, which, conveniently, is the best way to learn to read. I have enjoyed every opportunity to do so from my practicums in school to my volunteer work with The Headwaters Foundation afterschool program to the coaching I do now. Any chance to share the written word with a child is better than a box of chocolates for me.

I have spent my adult life working with individuals and families in poverty, writing grants, and raising two sons now off on their own: one starting his PhD in German literature and the other working as a plumber while studying for the ministry. I offer this as evidence of my ability to raise good readers, despite their distinct personalities and ambitions. My husband is a teacher at Rappahannock County High School. So, education runs deep and wide through all our days – pun most certainly intended.

When you are deciding who to spend your time with or, more importantly, entrust your child to, you deserve to know the person first. I hope I'm the right fit for you, but there's only one way to find out. Let's meet, get to know each other, and see if we want to take this learning journey together.

The Root of Every Single Word

My methodology is grounded in the Science of Reading, as I use evidence-based habits and phonological skill-building to create a strong literacy base for every student.

Parents are the first and most important teachers.  I come alongside families to help them meet their reading goals.  I provide as much or as little help as you need.
